The success of Bangladesh in disaster management is highly praised around the world. The key to this success is the social bonds of the country's people, mentality towards volunteerism and the contribution of volunteers - who are often the first responders in an emergency. Now, considering the need of volunteers in disaster management, these guidelines provide practical advice and support to volunteers themselves, and to organisations involving volunteers in emergency preparedness and response. The guidelines are designed to ensure that the role of volunteers as communicators is recognised and fully leveraged to the benefit of affected populations.
The guidelines were created by the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and the IFRC on behalf of Shongjog, with support from the UK Department for International Development.
